Orwells Butchers have been established in Ipswich for the past 30 years (previously under The Meat Inn) and back in 2014 Martin Wells, the Manager of the Meat Inn, took over the business and opened as Orwells. Martin has a wealth of experience within the Butchery business since leaving school.

1983 – 1984   Martin worked at the Co-Operative Department Store as a Saturday boy as his first introduction to Butchery. He found that he had a keen interest to progress in this field so the Co-op took him on full time in 1984.

 In 1986 Martin did 6 months with Stuart Brothers (who were based in Littlewoods Department Store) and then 6 months with Asda, Ipswich at which point Martin felt he would gain more experience within a private butchers so he joined the Meat Inn in 1987.

 Martin started with the Meat Inn as a “sausage maker” and after 3 years of training progressed to being a fully fledged Butcher. Martin relocated to Bury St Edmunds in 1990 to work as a Butcher until 1992 when he became the Manager of the shop for a further 3 years.

The Meat Inn had Butcher shops within Suffolk, Essex and Diss so in 1995 Martin became the Relief Area Butcher Manager working out of Diss, Braintree, Witham, Bishop Stortford, Waltham Cross, Halstead and Sudbury trouble shooting, quality control and ensuring that practices and legislation was being met.

1998 Martin became the permanent Manager of the Meat Inn in Carr Street, Ipswich where he has been ever since until taking over the business in 2014.

Orwells Butchers opened in August 2014 with the same friendly team which between them have vast experience in the Butchery business. Over the years they have all built up good customer relations and are well known for going the extra mile with a smile. They have always got time for a natter with their long term customers as well as new.
